Here are some options for free text-to-speech:
1. Best free downloads for virtually any browser/application:
SpokenText: SpokenText will convert virtually any text into an mp3, but not instantaneously. You have to enter the text in their website or send it to them in an email, and they will create the mp3 for you. The reader voice is great, but you have to wait a little while.
Speakonia: Speakonia is basically a clipboard that reads whatever you put in it — although there are a few more features than that. It uses Microsoft Speech Technology and also supports most other TTS programs. If you download other Microsoft Language modules, Speakonia will be able to read those languages, too.
Natural Readers: This one is very simple to download and use. Once you have it installed, you just highlight any text anywhere on your computer, click a button, and the program will read it with a pretty good voice. Unfortunately, the free version will only read up to a certain number of words at one time, so you have to keep highlighting and clicking on lengthy pieces of text.
2. Best mozilla firefox add-on downloads
The nice thing about these is that they are created to fully fit with the browser’s format, so they are able to sensibly read links, widgets, etc.
Fire Vox: designed specifically for individuals who have vision impairments or reading disabilities.
CLiCk Speak: designed specifically for individuals who are not visually impaired but just prefer to listen.
